Association between Evolutionary Conservation and Cancerous Mutations

Orel Levy Tamir Tuller

The detection of meaningful cancerous mutations should be helpful both for diagnosis and for developing novel therapies.

In this project, based on the analysis of mutations from thousands of cancerous genomes we demonstrate that regions with high evolutionary conservation tend to be associated with more cancerous mutations. This result suggests that evolutionary conservation can be used as an important feature for evaluating the effect of cancerous mutations on the fitness of the cancer cell.
