Evolution of space architecture and technologies for ultra broadband communications

After a couple decades of “steady” development mainly characterized by incubation of broadband communication Ka band the satellite communication is entering in a new phase of emerging architecture and technologies enabling a full set of new applications and services.

New generation High Throughput Satellites (HTS) will deploy multi hundreds giga bit/s of capacity in a single Geo Stationary satellite with an unprecedented experimented level of flexibility. Software defined payload and satellite is now a real technology horizon opening the way for a full integrated development between the space segment and the terrestrial infrastructure and user segment. It will allow new paradigm in conceiving and delivering services to a wide spectrum of users from institutional and governmental needs to commercial B2B and the mass market applications.

At the same time a new phase for global constellations is emerging. Private investors believe in full layer of connectivity realized with new generation global constellations built with a very high number of smaller satellite, also microsatellites, delivering low latency communication.

The paper will go through those key elements in the technology and architectural paradigm shift with examples of application and services Telespazio, one of the world’s leading company in space applications and end-to-end satellite communications services, has in development to support new demands and needs. Highlights to specific projects like full connectivity for Unmanned Vehicle will be also given showing how present institutional demands will be followed by a potential very large market in the commercial services related to automatic vehicle and Internet of Things.
