Exploring Chemical and Biological Sensing in the THz area

THz electromagnetic waves with wavelengths lying between visible light and the telecommunications region offer an unprecedented opportunity for discovery in sensing.
Molecules that exhibit rotational and vibrational modes in THz frequencies are suitable for spectroscopic sensing and identification. Research demonstrated that both chemical and bio-molecules can have distinct signatures in the THz region. However, the limited availability of suitable components for spectrometers, like sources and detectors, operating in the THz region hinders further development. This presentation will review the major scientific challenges and examine some alternative concepts for THz sensing and identification.
