Introduction: A group of patients with cardiac pacemaker implanted enlarges expansively. After implantation some changes in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and in renal function may be observed.

Material and Methods: The study group consisted of 117 who underwent implantation of a pacemaker with AAI/R, DDD/R or VVI/R pacing mode. Plasma BNP level and serum and urea concentration were assessed during index hospitalization and after three and six months as well as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) according to MDRD formula.

Results: Significant correlations between plasma BNP level and renal function parameters were observed before and after implantation.

Conclusions: Significant changes in serum creatinine and urea level as well as in eGFR are observed after pacemaker implantation. Renal function parameters are correlated with plasma BNP concentration. B-type natriuretic peptide may be a useful marker of renal function after pacemaker implantation.
