Bioelectrochemical systems are systems in which redox enzymes or microorganisms are being used as biocatalysts of electrochemical reactions. These may be used as part of biosensing devices or as catalysts in biofuel cells. Due to these biocatalysts insulating nature, electron communication with electrodes is very limited. Here, I will demonstrate different strategies that were taken in our lab to improve enzyme-electrode communication. I will show non-specific wiring approaches such as by using reduced graphene oxide1,2 and by using genetically modified elongated bacteria attached to an electrode in a layer-by layer approach to enable its attachment to long multiwalled carbon nanotubes.3 I will compare the power outputs of fuel cells constructed from these wired systems to fuel cells with site- specifically wired bacteria with surface displayed redox enzymes.4
