Selection Process to the German KSK Special Force Unit from a Medical Aspect

Prince Joy
KSK, Germany

German military Special Forces were founded in 1994. Since then, selection tests to the unit are conducted twice a year. By using significant physical and psychological pressure, the tests are designed to check if the candidate is suitable for the unit. The selection tests are composed of six long ordeals, previously described by a former SF commander as the `toughest testing which can be deemed acceptable in a democracy`. Although only few candidates pass the selection tests, it is clearly understood that standards should not be compromised.

Due to its risky nature, it is obligatory that a physician will always be present along the selection process. The talk will describe the selection process in general and from a medical point of view. It will clarify the role of the physician in the process and will discuss different typical medical conditions and updates.
