Osseointegrated implants are an alternative for prosthetic attachment that is directly anchored to the bone and bypasses the many disadvantages of wearing a socket. However, this new concept raised concern about the risk of ascending infection and related complications.

Here we report on the safety of the implants currently used in a total of 86 trans-femoral patients. Overall, mild infection and irritation in the skin penetration area were common but manageable. Severe infections resulting in septic implant loosening were rare.
