Oמ the Trail of a Magical Boat: Magical Practice and its Narrative Manifestation in Jewish Folktales

In Meir Grunwald`s book "Tales, Songs & Folkways of Sepharadic Jews"there are two folktales dealing with the escape of Jewish scholars from the inquisition` dungeon by creating a magical boat. He recorded them from members of the Spanish-Jewish community in Romania.

In his book Grunwald also describes a painting of a magical ship from a manuscript which he saw at the Bezalel Museum eighty years ago, of a Rabbi and his family sitting in the boat, while four demons are helping to steer it. I was able to locate the painting and examine it closely. Mr. Gal Sofer who prepares his doctoral thesis about manuscripts of Jewish magic books, identified the painting as part of a manuscript of the book "Solomon`s Key", a manuscript that is over two hundred years previous to all known manuscripts of the book.

In my lecture, I discuss the painting details and its possible connection to folktales dealing the use of magical practice by Jewish scholars.

בספרו של מאיר גרונוואלד "סיפורי עם של יהודי ספרד" מובאים שני סיפורי עם על בריחה של רבנים יהודיים משבי האינקוויזיציה באמצעות בריאת ספינה מאגית.

גרונוואלד מתאר בספרו גם ציור של ספינה מאגית מתוך כתב יד שאותו ראה במוזיאון בצלאל לפני כשמונים שנה עלה בידי לאתר את הציור ולבחון אותו מקרוב. מר גל סופר זיהה את הציור כחלק מכתב יד של הספר "מפתח שלמה", כתב יד הקודם במאתיים שנה לכתבי היד המוכרים של הספר.
