This paper will elaborate on Joseph Gutmann`s short essay "Joseph ben Kalonymus: the enigma of a thirteenth-century Hebrew scribe" (2000). I will briefly touch on his learned and poetic output, and then consider his work both as vocaliser-masorete, including Masorah figurata, as draftsman, and as artistic agent mediating between patrons and illuminators in the 1230s.
