Acute Diarrhea ; Epidemiological Profile in the Pediatric Department CHU Batna; Algeria

Introduction: In Algeria, acute diarrhea is considered the leading cause of infant mortality and the second leading cause of morbidity after acute respiratory infections.

Objective: To verify the epidemiological, clinical and evolutionary aspects of acute diarrhea in our region (Batna); We carried out a retrospective survey from january to december 2015 in the pediatric department of the Batna CHU involving children under 4 years admitted for acute diarrhea

Results: We collected 279 cases (13.97% of hospitalizations); Male predominance 61%, children aged 6 to 12 months were the most affected. Dehydration was the most common accompanying sign (72.40%) and vomiting was seen in 66.66% of cases; Fever was present in 50.53% of cases.

In 50% of the cases the etiology was parenteral whereas viral diarrhea accounted for 41% of the cases.
