Orthopedic Surgeons’ Knowledge and Habits Regarding Intraoperative Radiation Exposure: A Survey Analysis

Background: The use of fluoroscopy in orthopedic surgeries is rapidly increasing as the prevalence of minimally invasive surgeries expands. This trend puts the orthopedic surgeon in risk for radiation induced injuries and requires embracing of protective measures.

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of orthopedic surgeons working in Israel about the risks of radiation exposure and assess their working habits regarding radiation protection.

Methods: A questionnaire with a total of 14 questions was sent to orthopedic surgeons working in Israel. The questionnaire evaluated participants’ use of fluoroscopy, whether they received radiation training, and the use of radiation protective equipment.

Results: Ninety orthopedic surgeons, with varied levels of experience, who completed the survey were included in the study. 61% of surgeons use fluoroscopy in over half of their surgeries. Among subspecialties, trauma and spine surgeons are exposed the most. Sixty-six surgeons stated they had safety training regarding in-surgery fluoroscopy usage, yet declarations regarding knowledge about protocols of radiation utilization showed poor familiarity with the topic. The leading radiation protection article in use is the leaded apron, followed by the lead thyroid protector. Leaded eyeglasses and sterile protection gloves are hardly at use. Experience level does not affect the tendency to use radiation protective items.

Conclusions: The use of fluoroscopy in orthopedic surgeries is high. Radiation training is lacking and so does the use of radiation protection means. Further guidance is warranted for surgeons in levels of experience.
