Background: In the last few years there is a growth of the cases of coronary artery disease, among young patients below 45 years, both in developing and developed countries.
Material and methods: We are introducing a retrospective analysis of the data base of two angiography centers in Bulgaria from the period between January 2015 and May 2017. During that time we have treated 778 patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, 103 (13%) of whom under 45 years of age. We have analyzed the risk profile of the patients, the results of the coronary angiography, as well as the early cardio-vascular outcomes.
Results: The examined patients are between 32 and 45 years of age (mean age 42.2 years), most of whom men - 93 (91%) and 10 women (9%). Young patients are more often diagnosed with STEMI (72% of the cases), results show. Common risk factors are smoking and obesity. To be pointed out is the fact that one of the patients has been using oral contraceptives and smoking over a long period of time. The single vessel disease dominates among our patients - 55.3%. Conclusion: The results of our experience are worrying - the frequency of the acute coronary syndrome among young patients is unfortunately too high (13%). Our efforts are concentrated on enhancing the disease prevention and examination of the risk factors, as well as a strict clinical control of the treatment of those patients.
