Publication Rate of Papers Presented in the Annual Meetings of the Israeli
Orthopaedic Association

Introduction: Publication rate of podium presented abstracts at different national

orthopaedic meetings throughout the years is reported to be high, between 34% to 67%.

Our purpose was to determine the publication rate of work presented in the annual

meetings of the Israeli orthopaedic association from 2008 to 2012.

Materials and Methods: We reviewed abstract presentations of annual meetings of the

Israeli orthpaedic association between 2008 through 2012. All invited and plenary

lectures were excluded, along with reviews and papers that were published prior to the

meetings. Pubmed and Google Scholar searches were performed, using the presentation

title, authors’ names and key words to find similar publications. The specific orthopedic

subspecialty was noted, as well as the time of publication.

Results: 1008 papers were presented between 2008 through 2012. Out of which, 475

abstracts were excluded according to the noted criteria. Of the remaining 533

presentations, 43% (229) went on being published in peer-reviewed journals, in an

average time of 25 months. By individual subspecialties, 47% (41) out of the trauma

presentations were published; 39% (26) of joint replacement; 46% (42) of sport; 46%

(20) of foot and ankle; 30% (23) of hand surgery; 17% (2) of orthopaedic oncology; 52%

(11) of spine surgery; 39% (23) of pediatrics orthopaedics; 59% (31) of research and 46%

(10) of what was presented under the title of “general orthopaedics”.

Conclusion: The publication rate of papers presented in the Israeli orthopaedic

association meetings between 2008 through 2012 was 43%, in an average time of two

years from presentation date to publication. Even though the Israeli meetings are a place

to present work that may be of interest to the local orthopaedic forum alone, the high

number of publication rate shows the importance and impact of these meetings in the

advancement of the global orthopaedic research and practice.
