Grain refinement in metals is a well-known method for mechanical properties improvement. Pulse Magneto Oscillation (PMO) is an innovative technique that has been studied for refining of the solid structure during solidification in which pulses of electric current are induced through the metal during its solidification by an external oscillating magnetic field.
The goal of current study is to investigate the effect of PMO treatment during solidification on the mechanical properties of pure aluminum.
The results show that applying PMO treatment during solidification of aluminum, refines the grain structure and improves structure homogeneity of the solidified aluminum. Both strength and elongation were improved in PMO treated samples by up to 21%. The mechanical properties demonstrate correlation with grain size as expected from hall-Patch theorem.
