The Functional Mind - An ADHD Perspective

Rationale
In the DSM-V the features of ADHD (attention, memory, executive, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) are cluttered and disorganized. ADHD is considered a spectrum disorder yet these features come with no grading of functional severity.

Objective
The aim was to construct a diagnostic evaluation system where each of these characteristic features are separated, and graded. Comorbidities are also identified and graded, in order to provide an optimal treatment plan.

Methods
The new evaluation system was initially introduced in 2007, requiring 2-4 hours per single evaluation. More than 2500 patients, ages 3-65 have been evaluated and treated. Most have remained in contact with our clinic, providing a perspective of the impact of the evaluation on life progress and prognosis.

Results
In the lecture, a glimpse into the evaluation and grading system will be provided. The fact that ADHD is a spectrum will be demonstrated. This approach further supports the contemporary notion that ADHD is a complex of innate and lifelong characteristics. These characteristics represent mind functions that describe our daily behavior and cognition. Therefore, while starting as a grading system, the project reveals new perspectives into the workings of the mind.

Conclusions
The project presents the importance of a thorough initial evaluation process for ADHD. When the evaluation is done correctly, separating, identifying and grading each of the mind`s functional processes enables the practitioner to create a more vivid understanding of the patient`s behavior and cognition, and provide better treatment and support throughout lifetime.
