Somatic and Typological Characteristics as a Criterion of Basketball Players Selection

Background: Diagnostic interest of human body build somatic and typological peculiarities and people`s disposition towards doing sport, particularly playing basketball were stated by our research results.

Aims: To evaluate role of somatic and typological characteristics for effective selection of basketball players.

Methods: 30 young basketball players from a young athletic center (Lisakovsk, Kazakstan) took part in the research. Somatoscopic and somatometric methods were used to fulfill the set research aims.

Results: We defined different types of body build, using different authors` classifications. According to V. G. Shtefco and A. D. Ostrovsky`s classification, there were 15 (50%), with thoracic constitutional type; with muscular one - 4 (13%), with asthenic one - 8 (27%), with combined one - 3 (10%).

According to P. N. Basharov classification, the following constitutional types were found: mesomorphic – 19 (63%); dolichomorphic – 8 (27%); no brachymorphic type was found, combined – 3 (10%).

According to M. V. Chernorutzky classification the following constitutional types were found: normosthenic - 18 (60%); asthenic - 8 (27%); combined - 4 (13%). There were no participants with hypersthenic constitutional type

Conclusion: Some conclusions were drawn on the basis of the research results: somatic and typological peculiarities define human organism hereditary features marks, sportsmen`s potential abilities and the best way for their training can be revealed. They are also an important factor for basketball players` selection in different sport specializations.
