Small Size – Big Impact, Nanomaterials in RAFAEL

Doron Yadlovker Rafael, Israel

Nanomaterials have long been recognized for several interesting attributes, including large surface to volume ratio, versatility and tailorability, remarkable properties and potential to meet high-end requirements. Rafael has been working on research and implementation of novel nanomaterials in various systems, to serve in challenging missions demanding unique performance.

The wide scope of Rafael`s involvement with nanomaterials will be addressed, with an emphasis on the following topics:

  • Incorporation of inorganic nanotubes in PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) for withstanding ballistic shock.
  • Flash ignition of nanothermites using nano-sized aluminum.
  • Transparent super-hydrophobic coatings for a variety of surfaces, with excellent optical transmission and a capability for withstanding harsh environmental conditions.
  • Sub-wavelength structures for application as anti-reflective coatings for service in high temperature and corrosive atmospheres.

It will be shown that nanomaterials greatly enhance a variety of properties, and that meticulous study and employment of them facilitate excellent performance, even under extreme conditions.
