International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS) Protocol for North Indian Pre-School Children: A Hospital Based Modification

Background: International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS) is a comprehensive protocol that addresses all of diagnostic, preventive and restorative decisions to preserve the tooth and restore only when it is indicated. ICCMS suggests various risk factors to evaluate the individual likelihood of caries risk status and simultaneously suggests treatment plan for respective risk group. The ICCMS protocol gives emphasis on preventive and conservative management. However, it also provides the flexibility to adopt or modify the risk factors and treatment plan according to different regions and cultures. India is a developing country and has a unique feature of diverse demographic backgrounds in its various regions. This poster aims to highlight the key features of the modified ICCMS protocol.

Methods: Modification and development of customized ICCMS protocol for north Indian pre school children at the Apex tertiary care hospital of India was done using qualitative research methodology.

Results: The ICCMS protocol adapted for Indian population was effective in developing customized treatment plan according to caries risk status of children; as per their oral hygiene habits, nocturnal bottle feeding, dietary preferences and other key factors.

Conclusion: The modification for adapting the ICCMS tool was a challenge keeping in mind resource limitations and educational status of the parents. This protocol can be effective in comprehensive management of ECC in developing countries with effective regional adaptation.
