Background: Dental is one of the most prevalent disease and yet there is considerable variation in its occurrence between countries, regions within countries, areas within regions, social and ethnic groups.
The consequences of the disease have significant impact on children’s daily lives . These include pain, interference with sleep, loss of time from school and difficulty in chewing food. Often children resort to much softer diet which in turn has impact on the overall nutrition, growth, development, well being and emotional development.
Method: A study is conducted to assess the bite force of children in the age group of 3 to 6 years having ECC and compared it with the same age group children with sound dentition. The bite force of the children with ECC is assessed before and oral rehabilitation. The rehabilitation is done by proper brushing along with parent’s education, topical fluoride application, restorations and with non fluoride remineralizing agents.
Results: There is considerable improvement in the bite force of the children with ECC following oral rehabilitation. Which shows positive effect on the overall well being of the child when compared with same age children with no carious lesions.
Conclusion: Early intervention and management of ECC has positive effect on improving the Oral functions of the children with ECC. It has shown to reduce the discomfort and prevent further complications of untreated ECC physically , emotionally and fiscally to the child and parents both.
