Objective: This study aimed to assess success rates of class II SMART restorations in mandibular primary molars under the Dental Proactive Project.

Methods: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry, Prince of Songkla University. Children aged 3-5 years who were selected for class II SMART restorations on lower primary molars under the Dental Proactive Project of Public Health Region 12 were recruited for the study. One hundred and forty-one teeth were included. Soft caries was removed by spoon excavators and then the cavities were restored with GIC (Fuji IX GP capsule, GC Corp., Japan) by dental therapists as part of an ongoing regular project. Clinical examination for ART codes was conducted at the 6-month follow-up. Descriptive analyses and Chi-square test were performed.

Results: The success rate of restorations was 70.7%. The success rates of restorations on the primary first molars and the primary second molars were 66.3% and 83.0%, respectively. For primary first molars, success rate of the occluso-mesial (OM) cavities (90.5%) was significantly different from those of the occluso-distal (OD) cavities (59.7%) at p<0.01.

Conclusions: For SMART Class II restorations, being OD cavity of primary first molar was more likely to be failed.
