Methodology Applied for Flood Risk Analysis and Reduction

Flood risk has been the subject of study for decades. Given the complexity of local scale analysis, the development of specific methodologies to analyses flood risk in urban areas is required. Flood risk management can be defined as a dynamic cyclical process of risk analysis, assessment and reduction. On this basis, it is possible to apply a methodology for flood risk analysis, supported by the joint implementation of stochastic models of convective storms, distributed hydrological modeling, two-dimensional hydraulic modeling, multivariate statistical analysis and estimation of direct tangible damage. The results obtained with this variety of methods, spatially integrated with geographic information systems, allow risk to be quantified and mapped. With this methodology it is possible to analyze the risk in the current situation, as well as implementing prevention measures in the future
