Analysis of Presence of Pesticide Waste at Water Collection Areas for Public Supply

The quality of the water consumed is essential for the maintenance of the healthy quality of life of society. Joint actions between the preservation of water sources and adequate water treatments allows the removal of compounds harmful to human health. Numerous water treatment plants in operation in Brazil have conventional treatment steps (coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and fluoridation) for the removal of organic and inorganic compounds. Some inorganic compounds are persistent in the aquatic environment and for their removal, applications of advanced water treatment systems are required. Pesticide residues are persistent compounds and if swallowed, they are associated with different chronic diseases. Brazil uses widely pesticides to control pests and thus jeopardizes the quality of surface and groundwater in its territory. In this context, this research investigated the presence of atrazine and simazine in water from a river used for human capture, treatment and supply. The Suruvi River is located in the municipality of Concórdia, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The water collection site of this research is the same point used by the concessionaire to capture water for later treatment. The collections were carried out during crop periods in the region. The concessionaire has a conventional treatment station and the average flow rate of the Suruvi River is 40L / s. The investigative results on simazine and atrazine were compared with the National Legislation - CONAMA 357/2005. Pesticide residues were found in two analyzes. The concentrations are 0.5 μg / L, below the limit of legislation (2 μg / L), being in compliance. These compounds of pesticides are persistent in the medium and have an estimated life time of 2 months to 06 years having mobility by water and soil. The presence of simazine and atrazine indicates the use of agrochemicals in nearby areas that can directly affect the fauna and microfauna of the river and the local population. To better analyze the activities around the river and the results of pesticide compounds, a map (GIS Geographic Information System) was carried out. In this map are agricultural areas and preserved areas in the basin where the Suruvi river is inserted. Investigations on the mobility of simazine and atrazine and their effects on locality are required.
