Objectives: This study was to analyse the principal variables which determine the method of treatment and outcome in traumatic injuries from the Temporal Area.
Material and Method: Thirty polytraumatized patients (18 men and 12 women) with maxillofacial injuries in the temporal bone were included in this experience. They were divided into two groups of 15 each one. First Group: Temporal fractures down local approaches were researched by limited incisions and via lacerations. Second Group: Temporal fractures upper were performed by coronal approach. Open reduction and osteosynthesis, were realised in all the cases using titanium microplates and titanium mesh. Data was analysed by standard statistical methods.
Results: 1. Postoperative followed up by x-ray waters view and CT scans verified anatomic reduction and osteosynthesis. 2. A successful outcome of the treatment was achieved in spite of the methodological variations and the difference in the approaches used.
Conclusions: This study shows two ways of treatment in temporal fractures. One of local approaches and limitated incisions and the other, by coronal approach. The therapeutic means are reached by both groups . While limited incisions have done a good esthetical result without scars, Coronal or bi- temporal incision is a versatile surgical approach to the upper and middle regions of the facial skeleton including the zygomatic arch.
