Tumor resection can sometimes leave the patient with facial deformity that complicates his everyday life. Not always a complete surgical reconstruction is possible concomitantly with the tumor resection. Two cases of prosthetic rehabilitation of facial deformities with extra oral prosthesis will be presented, following wide excisions in the head and neck region.
The first case is a patient treated for SCC on the right lower part of the face. The treatment included wide resection involving the right lower lip, reconstructed with flap and radiation treatment. The right lower lip wasn’t reconstructed during the surgery as a result the patient suffered from lip incompetence and consequently from exposed gums and exposed lower denture.
The prosthetic reconstruction was done with combined acrylic prosthesis – lower denture with extending lip prosthesis. It provided a big esthetic and functional improvement.
The second case is a patient with a wide defect of the left cheek and mandible after osteoradionecrosis and subsequent debridement. The remaining facial defect was temporarily reconstructed with silicone facial prosthesis.
The two patients presented were rehabilitated with extra oral prosthesis from various materials applied in dentistry and received esthetic and functional solution of the facial deformities.
Thus, maxillofacial prosthesis provides functional and esthetic solution for patients with surgical deformities following wide resections.
