Fountain of loveThis image shows multiple axonal projections of the oxytocin producing neurons in the zebrafish posterior pituitary. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone and neurotransmitter, which is produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by posterior pituitary upon physiological stimuli. Oxytocin, frequently called a ‘love hormone’, plays a pivotal role in social bonding, sexual reproduction, childbirth and more. The whole-mount imaging of the dissected pituitary from adult transgenic reporter zebrafish, which allows visualization of labelled oxytocin neurons, was performed by confocal microscope.
