Oral and Maxillo facial Unit, Ziv Medical Center, Safed

Objectives: It is our aim to share the experience collected between 2013-2018 treating Syrian wounded in the civic conflict, as well as treating other Syrian Citizens in their dire moments of need.

Though our experience mainly focuses on facial trauma, including gun-shot wounds, we share our experience in various Maxillofacial surgical fields.

Using our surgical & medical training, combined with other departments in the Ziv Medical Center it was our role to provide care and help an enemy country- a very complex and prolonged mission.

We fell that our duty has not ended yet- and part of it is sharing our own unique experience.

Methods: Between 2013-2018 over 1200 Syrian casualties were treated in Ziv Medical Center, 1/3 of them needing our inspection and treatment.

The range of needs included "simple" dental trauma, dental infection, ballistic trauma (direct projectiles and secondary "shrapnel") and even more complex late facial trauma complications such as TMJ/ Coronoid ankylosis, loss of eyes/ facial cosmesis and function.

Results: The main findings are shared, discussing our experience and our "protocol".

Conclusion: The principal conclusion drawn from our report is the essential role of the OMF surgeon in treatin multi-diciplinary treatment needs in areas of military and semi-military scenarios.
