Objectives: temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a severe disorder described as intrcapsular union of the disc-condyle complex to the temporal articular surface with bony fusion, leading to functional alteration and disability.
Methods: we describe a 30 years old female patient with Pierre Robin sequence with reankylosis after many surgeries, treated with bilateral total joint replacement. The prosthesis were custom made (TMJ Concept). The initial mouth opening was of 1 cm and after surgery was of 35 mm.
Results: the total bilateral joint replacement leads to improvement of of oral functions including speaking, chewing, eating, hygiene as well as improved quality of life.
Conclusion: management of TMJA is difficult and ios childhood is a condition that must be diagnosed and promptly treated. It may leads to facial asymmetry, retrognathia, open bite, bird-face appearence. Total joint replacemnte is the the treatment of choice when reankylosi occured.
