Pneumonia remains an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Better microbiological techniques are helping us understand the mechanisms of bacterial and viral infection. However widespread use of antibiotics for many viral infections is leading to microbial resistance. Vaccination is also altering the profile of disease, although the majority of lower respiratory tract infections are still viral in origin.
