A simple method was developed for the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles by reduction of Ag(H2O)2+ and AuCl4- by NaBH4. The particles were synthesized in 0%, 30%, 50% and 100% D2O concentrations in H2O with NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained particles were confirmed by STEM to be monodispersed and spherical in shape. The nanoparticles prepared in the presence of D2O are considerably larger than those prepared under identical conditions in 100% H2O. DFT calculations confirm that the solvent plays a key role in the reduction.
