Background: Severe poisoning in pediatrics patients needs intensive care admission because of the life – threatening condition that can cause toxic.
Objective is to evaluate the clinical characteristic and outcome of severe poising in pediatric intensive care medicine.
Methods: This is retrospective study was conducted in PICU in ORAN in Algeria from July 2016 to September 2020. We included all children aged 1 month to 15 admitted for poising.
Results: 41 children were admitted to PICU. The mean age was 4, 4±3, 7 years with sex ratio of 1, 38. The poisoning was accidental in 90, 7%. Substance involved in poisoning were drugs (43, 9), pesticides (24%), Petroleum product (12%), carbon monoxide (9,8) and plants(9,8). Clinical presentation were neurologic (86%) followed by respiratory 28%, gastro-intestinal 25% and cardio-vascular 21%. Organ support needs were oxygene requirement 42%, intubation 28% and antidote 21%. The mortality rate was 4,7%. The mean of stay in PICU was 2,4 days.
Conclusion: Acute intoxications are still a concern for parent and healthcare. An education and poison prevention programs should be launched to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by toxic
