Adolescents Mental Health Status and Compliance to Clean Healthy Behavior during Covid-19 Pandemic

Background: Isolation and quarantine in Covid-19 tend to create unpleasant conditions for anyone affected. The psychological impact of this condition is usually seen in various symptoms such as anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, and anger. Adhering to social distancing may be particularly challenging for adolescents, for whom interaction with peers is especially important. Psychological health may impact to adolescents’s clean healthy behavior.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health status of adolescents in West Java and to find out relationship between mental health status and compliance to clean healthy behavior for adolescents during Covid-19 pandemic in West Java.

Methods: A cross sectional study of 260 adolescent age 12-18 years from various junior and senior high school in West Java selected by randomized cluster sampling. 260 adolescents fill out an online self-administered Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire for mental health status and questionnaire of clean healthy behavior compliance during this pandemic Covid-19. For the analysis of categorical data, adolescent mental health status was tested using Chi-Square statistical test.

Results: Median age of 260 adolescents was 15 years old and majority senior high school. Percentage of mental health based on SDQ subscale showed as total difficulties, conduct problem, emotional symptoms, peer problems, hyperactivity-inattention, were borderline 16, 19, 12, 20, 9, and abnormal 22, 18, 43, 22, 5 respectively. Percentage of adolescent with good compliance of clean and healthy behaviour was 77

Conclusion: During pandemic COVID19 adolescent mental health mostly had emotional symptom, however the compliance of clean and healthy behaviour were good
