PRE-SERVICE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS’ MOTIVATION IN SPECIALISING IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Why do you want to be an English teacher? This question is one of the common questions an English teacher can come across in their professional and casual life. The question has a significant role in shedding some light on the reason and the motivation sources of an English teacher for specializing in the English teaching profession. As motivation is accepted as a significant factor in many fields, there are many motivations related to research in the education field to utilize the positive effect of it. This study investigated the reasons and attractors for the English teaching profession and the motivation of the pre-service teachers for their future job. With this investigation, the reasons and attractors are classified, and the relationship between them was examined for detailed information. For this purpose, pre-service English teachers at Çukurova University took part in this study as a participant, and the researcher gained data via questionnaire and interviews. Besides the detailed information related to the pre-service teachers` reasons and motivation, the study shed some light on the changes in these significant factors during teacher education. The results of the study contributed to teacher education and teacher motivation by shedding light on the primary reasons.
