Feminist and Women Movement among Emigrants from Azerbaijan in Israel

The research dwells upon specific features of the development of women and feminist movement among emigrants from Azerbaijan in Israel. Jews from former USSR formed community structures since the coming to Israel, repatriates from Azerbaijan are not exception to this rule. They created Israel-Azerbaijan Association that is rather influential in the political arena. But “women wing” of this organization is not developed enough. Similarly, the emigrants from Azerbaijan seldom may be found among participants of Facebook group “Russian women without sense of humor and their friend” that draws attention to the problems of repatriates from the post-soviet space with the special emphasis of status of women. The target of the research is to identify and analyze peculiarities of women and feminist movement among Jews from Azerbaijan in Israel, compare it with that of other communities in the country (e.g. Russian in general and Ethiopian). Also the work aims at finding specific features of feminism among Jews from Caucasus in Israel, who traditionally understand the role of woman differently but in Israel have to face with new reality. The research is partly based on the conclusions made in author’s PhD thesis, devoted to the analysis of Israeli diplomacy on the Post-Soviet space, including the role of Jewish communities, partly – on new field of scientific interests – women and feminist movement among 1.5-generation of Russian-speaking emigrants from former USSR in Israel. The research is based on interviews, social media publications and statistical data.
