The religious and political diversity of both Israel itself and the West Bank includes a variety of Christian constituencies with complex and sometimes hostile view of the Jewish state. The last decade has seen a continuing increase in anti-Zionist activities among segments of mainline Protestant churches and selected Catholic organizations, including those in the area. Understanding these developments requires both detailed analysis of contemporary developments and substantial knowledge of the theological and political history preceding and underlying them. A collection of new essays coedited by Cary Nelson and Michael Gizzi, Peace and Faith: Christian Churches and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, is on schedule to be in print by May 2021. It will be distributed by Academic Studies Press. Organized by one of the coeditors, this panel brings together a series of scholars to reflect on the issues at stake in these developments. Except for the panel organizer, panelists have not contributed essays to the book, though all have seen the manuscript. All the panelists have a history of writing about this subject and some have participated extensively in church debates.
