Beit Midrash Arevot is a Mizrahi-feminist Beit Midrash in Jerusalem. It is composed by women from different sides of the religious spectrum who get together to learn both the traditional texts of the Sephardi sages and contemporary authors on issues of Mizrahi women and the intra-Jewish ethnic conflict. They also reclaim female traditions and festivities ignored by mainstream Israeli Judaism, largely Ashkenazi. They challenge patriarchal impositions on women by means of Sephardi halachic traditions that were advantageous for women and reclaim the work of Sephardi female intellectuals and Torah scholars. This paper analyses the voice, language, and contributions ("the Torah of the mothers") of these Sephardi/Mizrahi Israeli women who have created a space of religious exploration combined with political activism and mutual support.
