In pediatric gastro-enterology we will probably encounter ‘functional GI disorders’ on a daily basis. Gastro-oesophageal reflux, rumination, abdominal migraine, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation are all examples of functional gastrointestinal disorders.
The era of diagnosing a functional GI disorder only when organic disease has been excludes is luckily fading. Every testing brings stress to the child and/ or adolescent, and it is a tremendous cost for our healthcare system.
We now have evidence thanks to the Rome IV criteria to support a symptom-based diagnosis, allowing the clinician to perform selective or no testing to support a positive diagnosis of functional GI disorder.
