The Prophet Samuel – the Shady Aspect

The statement related to God in Jeremiah 15:1: "Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people", compares Moses and Samuel and diminishes Jeremiah`s status. These two prophets are mentioned side by side, due to the fact that in demanding situations they defended their people and their prayer was answered. This comparison presents Samuel as a prophet similar to Moses. In my paper I will relate to Samuel’s shady side, that not only distances him from Moses, but moreover - highlights negative aspects in his personality.

המשפט הנמסר מפי האל בירמיהו טו 1: "אם יעמד משה ושמואל לפני, אין נפשי אל העם הזה...", משווה בין משה ושמואל ומפחית ממעמדו של ירמיהו. שני נביאים אלו נזכרים זה לצד זה משום שבמצבים קשים הם סינגרו על העם ותפילתם נענתה. השוואה זו מקנה לשמואל מעמד של נביא מסוגו של משה. בהרצאתי אתייחס לצד האפל של שמואל שלא זו בלבד שמרחיק אותו ממשה, אלא יתרה מזאת - מבליט צדדים שליליים באישיותו.
