Non-rabbinic Jews in Late Antique Galilee from an Archaeological Perspective

Professor Jodi Magness

Since 2011, excavations conducted by Jodi Magness at Huqoq in Lower Eastern Galilee have been bringing to light a monumental, late fourth century CE synagogue paved with mosaics depicting an array of biblical and non-biblical scenes. This presentation considers aspects of the mosaics that appear to be inconsistent with rabbinic views and point to diversity among Galilean Jews in the late antique period.
