Simulacra and doubles in "The Son`s Number" by Edgardo Cozarinsky and "Temptation" by Clarice Lispector
Silvia Berger. Smith College

Using the theoretical foundations of the conceptual pair simulate / disguise as conceived by Jean Boudrillard in his seminal article "Simulacra and Simulations", I propose to study the relationship between the physical, the urban and the different that informs the emotional journey of the central characters of these stories and, by the way, their possible double.
The problematic duo is superimposed on the performance, in an "alternative" theater, of a young magician capable of altering his own physiognomy in real time, on stage, in front of an audience eager for magic in "The number ...". In "Temptation", by contrast, the central character, a girl, seems to have "recognized" her double in a dog during a fleeting encounter of only a few minutes.
In both stories the Jewish "body" is problematized to the extreme, which allows me to venture into studies related to the diseased or deformed body, otherness, pilgrimage and the search for authenticity.
On the other hand, the urban topography in which the characters are found and “exist” is the key thanks to which it is possible for them to see, imagine and, perhaps, dream their own image.
The theoretical supports for my presentation include, in addition to the one mentioned above, the techniques of the self (M. Foucault), Jewish self-loathing (S. Gilman), literary creation (JL Borges), verbal pentimento (L. Helmann) and the infinite interpretative instances (A. Oz), among others.
