This talk focuses on a workshop offered as part of ongoing education projects in place at Afeka College of Engineering.
Afeka’s raison d’etre includes equipping future engineers with disciplinary knowledge, academic skills as well as with crucial skills in today’s Hi-Tech industry, such as effective communication and global competence. We believe that our students’ English language development should not come to an end after having graduated the Advanced2 level or even completed their degree. Based on these two principles, Afeka’s English Unit has established various skill-based workshops to cater to students and alumni alike.
The global economy and international nature of today’s job market requires a lingua franca: English. The ability to master relevant vocabulary, jargon and phrases in the workplace as well as to communicate effectively i.e. to present and express oneself, deliver presentations and messages – all are essential tools for professional success.
The English in the Workplace workshop enables its participants to develop English skills with a focus on job-related and professional contexts, equipping them with relevant vocabulary, communication skills and confidence.
By offering a safe environment for future and practicing engineers to gain knowledge, and practice skills, the workshop enables a smooth transition from the world of education to the work environment. The workshop focuses on 5 essential topics interwoven with global nuances and intercultural situations: introduction & networking; meetings; presentations; pitching; useful ‘do-s and don’t-s’.
While Afeka’s workshop is tailored for engineers, it serves as an innovative blueprint that could be replicated across disciplines and institutions.
