As we move from a reading comprehension-based approach to an approach that aims to include tasks that involve the four skills, be linked to the CEFR, and prepare learners to be able to function in their chosen field, we need to completely rethink our lessons and units of learning. This presentation will focus on a two-lesson unit of learning (8-9 academic hours) for an Advanced 2/Mikadmim Bet course for engineering students. Starting with an idea for an authentic task, a backward design approach was used to design a series of activities that would prepare the learners for the authentic task: A Q & A session with an English-speaking engineer. I will share the process of development – from the language goals based on the CEFR to the implementation of a PBLL approach, which clearly represents an “EPIC” (English for Professional Communication) unit.
