We have heard much about the ability to perform MRI examinations on patients who are situated in MRI scanners that are physically remote from the location of the technologist/radiographer performing the examination. In the past few years this has grown from an interesting novel idea to a rapidly growing reality. The International Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety has recently produced its IBMRS Guidelines for Safe Remote MR Scanning: 2026. In this presentation we will focus on the the primary points in which remote MR scanning differs from the routine “one tech one patient” in person scanning that has defined MRI to date since its clinical inception four decades ago. With proper management of safety, efficiency, and efficacy, remoteMR scanning will provide access to cutting edge MR imaging technology to people and geographies for whom it had previously been notably underserved or unavailable.
