The majority of MSK ultrasound requests involve abnormalities in soft tissues, including tendons, muscles, nerves, etc.

However, bony contours are readily visualized in most cases, and irregularities can be appreciated and assist in patient evaluation.

Associated soft tissue abnormalities may also be identified, and Doppler may be used as an adjunctive examination.

The purpose of our is to show various sonographic bony findings in:

- pediatric and neonatal trauma

- adult trauma

- benign bone tumors

- malignant primary and secondary bone tumors

- infection and inflammation

- findings on routine shoulder ultrasound

The ultrasound examination may indicate a definitive diagnosis, clarify unclear findings from other modalities, or suggest a direction for further work-up.

We encourage the examination of bony contours as part of the routine MSK examination, and especially in areas of patient symptoms if these are outside the "routine" examination region.
