The paper gives the results of investigation into turbulent mixing zone heterogeneity for gases having different density. Investigations were performed on the apparatus working in the mode of generating the steady-state shock wave with the Mach number М=1.7. The experiments used a pair of different-density gases: “CO2-nitrogen” (Atwood number A~0.2). Internal structure of the mixing zone was visualized using the “laser sheet” method with the sheet plane being normal to the plane of the contact boundary between the gases. Digital photorecorder was used to register the process of turbulent mixing development. The entire measurement path was calibrated in order to gather the data on gas mixture density in each point. Experimental results were used to determine the dimensionless gas mixture density vs time for different dimensionless coordinates ξ, as well as the heterogeneity coefficient vs time.
