The Association of Atrial Septal Aneurysm and Mitral Valve Prolapse

Introduction: Associated mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and atrial septal aneurism (ASA) are not common during cardiac ultrasound examination. On the other side, mitral valve prolapse and atrial septal aneurysm have certain clinical significance.

Aim: Aim of this study is determination of the mitral valve prolapse and atrial septal aneurism in patients with different cardiology symptoms and disorders, and special aim was establishing incidence of associated MVP and ASA.

Methods: We analyze all patients searched with transthoracic echocardiography in Cardiology department of the Health Center Gracanica in Serbia, during time interval 2012-2014.

Results: Totally we examined 1850 patients, both gender. Only 8 patients (0.43%) have associated ASA and MVP, 3 males (37.5%) and 5 females (62.5%). Middle age was 45 years. In that group 2 (25%) patients have prolapse of anterior mitral leaflet, 2 (25%) have prolapse of posterior mitral leaflet and 4 (50%) patients were with both mitral leaflets prolapse. In 3 patients left atrium was enlarged. Incidence of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation was not frequent.

Isolated MVP was found at 96 patients (5.19%), 30 males (31.25%) and 66 females (68.75%), with middle age 34 years. Anterior mitral leaflet prolapse was represented in 71 patient (73.96%), posterior mitral leaflet prolapse in 18 (18.75%), and both leaflet prolapse in 7 patient (7.29%). 59 patients (61.46%) have not significant mitral regurgitation, and 85 (88.54%) have normal left atrium.

Isolated AHA was found at 34 patients (1.84%), 13 males (38.24%) and 21 females (61.76%), with middle age 45 years. Mainly in this group mitral and tricuspid regurgitation were not significant, and left and right atriums have normal dimensions.

Conclusions: Incidence of associated mitral valve prolapse and atrial septal aneurysm is not common. Isolated mitral valve prolapse and atrial septal aneurysm were more often.
