Introduction: Tricuspid valve disease usually reflects advanced cardiac disease. Tricuspid valve repair combined with other procedures and in isolation become more common practice in the last decade. We thought to characterize the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients undergoing tricuspid valve repair in our institution.

Patients: Between 1994-2013, 431 patients underwent tricuspid valve annuloplasty in our institution.

Results: Patients age was 64±12 years. 377 (87%) were in NYHA class III-IV, 240 (56%) were in atrial fibrillation, 41 (10%) had prior stroke and 83 (19%) had renal failure. Left ventricular function was reduced in 93 (22%) and 367 (85%) had mitral regurgitation of moderate or greater degree. 102 patients (24%) underwent concomitant coronary bypass, 83 (19%) underwent concomitant aortic valve intervention and 392 (91%) mitral valve intervention. Logistic EuroSCORE was 12±13. Operative mortality was 14% (n=59). Survival at 3, 5 and 10 years was 70%, 63% and 50% respectively.

Summary:

  1. The frequency of tricuspid valve repair increased over the last years.
  2. Isolated tricuspid valve repair is a rare procedure.
  3. Long term results of tricuspid valve repair are good.
