Current Status Of Mitral Valve Therapies

Severe mitral regurgitation is a common and complex disease that is associated with an adverse prognosis. For decades the gold standard for treatment of severe secondary mitral valve regurgitation was the surgical approach. Recently, multiple technologies for transcatheter mitral valve therapy have emerged, with the potential for both repair and replacement.

Beside the surgical opportunities the various percutaneous techniques will be described including an updated literature review and current status of results. There is no doubt that further rigorous studies are needed to determine the effiacy and safety of new strategies in mitral valve repair.
